Leech Lake has a spectacular fishery, with a wide diversity of sport fish available. The lake is full of fish holding structures, with many islands, points, drop-offs and weedlines. One of the most popular events held on Leech Lake each winter, usually during February is the International Eelpout Festival. The eel pout, also known as the Burbot, is very plentiful in Leech Lake during the winter and this event attracts hundreds of anglers from all over the USA and Canada. The event includes a black-tie dinner, ice bowling, and a contest to see who can catch the largest eel pout.
