fishing tips

Lake Irving is a small natural lake of the Mississippi River basin located in the city of Bemidji, Minnesota. It is directly joined to Lake Bemidji by the Mississippi River. Boaters travelling between the two lakes should use caution due to old railroad pilings that are still present in the river channel between the two lakes. Lake Irving is a shallow lake with a maximum depth of 19 feet and has a relatively healthy fish population, even thou much of the area around the lake has been urbanized. The fishery is enriched by it's connection to Bemidji Lake, which allows fish to migrate between the two water bodies, especially during the spring spawning runs.

Lake Irving's walleye population is quite good considering the lake receives substantial fishing pressure throughout the season. The average Irving Lake walleye is 1 lb, although larger fish in the 5-6 lb range are caught on occasion. Walleye are successfully reproducing in the lake due to the presence of multiple year classes of walleye. Walleye also migrate into the lake from the Mississippi River which further enhances the fishery.

Black crappie and bluegill also inhabit Lake Irving and are heavily targeted by anglers. Crappie are not overly abundant but the lake often yields nice slab crappie up to 14", with larger specimens caught annually. Bluegills make up the larger biomass of the panfish in Lake Irving, with a very healthy population. Bluegill up to 10" are caught annually.

Northern pike can also be found in Irving Lake with the average fish caught being about 2 lb. Larger pike in the 5 lb class are becoming rarer catches as the lake continues to produce higher numbers of "hammer handle" pike. This commonly occurs in shallow weedy lakes where a stunted pike population is observed. Anglers are encouraged to keep these smaller pike and release larger fish to help the population. Other species present in Lake Irving included pumpkinseed, bullhead catfish, rock bass, yellow perch and largemouth bass.
