Ucluelet & Barkley Sound 09-15-09

This summer has been surprisingly good in Ucluelet, BC. While 2008 was kind of slow, 2009 has certainly rebounded.

We have mainly been trolling using spoons, anchovies, hutchies, and tomic plugs. These have been effective for bringing in Chinook salmon (Kings) and Coho (Silvers).

Chinook and Coho have been biting this summer. Chinook have weighed up to 45 pounds once July and August rolled around. Coho were so plentiful that sometimes we couldn't troll for more than a minute without a bite!

Halibut were not as plentiful as past years, but we still hit our limit on most days. The limit raise during August was helpful to saving time traveling to halibut fishing areas.

Weather is often the boss in Ucluelet, and wind or waves are the main reason that we don't catch our limit every single day. This summer, though, has been good weather; there have been very very few days we have been forced to fish protected waters.
